What is a salmon sperm facial? PDRN and polynucleotides
PDRN, or polydeoxyribonucleotide, is a mix of DNA fragments of different sizes. Polynucleotides, sometimes abbreviated PN, are longer chains from the same family. Both are obtained from salmon germ cells, then purified and sterilized until they are free of proteins, which is why human skin tolerates them well.
Their use didn’t start in aesthetics. PDRN was first studied in regenerative medicine, to support wound healing, and from there it moved into skin-quality treatments. At iki we use it as part of our PDRN · salmon sperm treatment, always after a medical consultation.
What about salmon sperm face masks?
Masks, creams and serums with salmon DNA circulate on social media. They can hydrate and soothe, but their effect is superficial: DNA fragments are large molecules, and the outer layer of the skin limits how much reaches the dermis. The studies with the best results use PDRN delivered into the skin, not applied as a cream alone.
Why salmon sperm specifically?
For a practical reason: salmon germ cells are an abundant source of DNA that is easy to purify, and the final product is similar enough to human DNA for the skin to tolerate it well. It has nothing to do with special properties of the fish or with salmon proteins, which are removed during processing.
In the skin, PDRN acts as a signal. It binds to cell receptors called adenosine A2A receptors, which take part in tissue repair: they support the activity of fibroblasts, which make collagen, the formation of small blood vessels and the control of inflammation. It also provides building blocks the cell can reuse to repair its own DNA.
Benefits of salmon sperm: what the evidence says
These are the most studied uses. The studies are encouraging, but many are small or have short follow-up, so we present each with its level of support.
1. Skin quality and texture
Several studies report better-hydrated skin, with improved elasticity and more even texture after a series of sessions. It is the best-supported use, although the changes are gradual and subtle.
2. Fine lines
By supporting fibroblast activity, it can soften fine lines over time. It doesn’t act on deep wrinkles or on expression lines, which depend on muscle movement.
3. Recovery after other treatments
Applied after a laser or microneedling, it can help the skin recover more comfortably. That’s why at iki it is often combined with other procedures.
4. Acne scars
Some studies use it together with laser or microneedling on acne scars, with better results than the procedure alone. It is a support, not the main treatment. If acne is your concern, start with acne treatments.
5. Sensitive skin
Because of its effect on inflammation, it is used on sensitive skin that doesn’t tolerate more intensive treatments well. With active rosacea or dermatitis, the condition is brought under control first.
How is salmon sperm applied?
PDRN needs a delivery method to carry it into the dermis. At iki, 2 cc are applied per session with one of these three, depending on the goal:

PDRN doesn’t change your skin overnight. It is usually planned as a series of sessions a few weeks apart, because the effect builds up. Some people notice brighter, more hydrated skin in the first weeks; texture and fine lines improve over the course of the series.
Once the series is complete, the effect usually holds for several months. Exactly how long depends on age, skin condition, the delivery method and sun care. In Bogotá, UV radiation is high all year because of the altitude, and without daily sunscreen any improvement fades faster.
Salmon sperm facial: before and after
If you look for before-and-after photos, keep in mind that the expected change is subtle: more even, hydrated, rested-looking skin, not a different face. After each session, mild redness or small dots are normal and usually fade within hours or a few days. Aftercare includes sunscreen, avoiding direct sun, saunas and intense exercise for a day or two, and pausing retinoids and exfoliants until the follow-up. It is generally well tolerated when a medical team applies it with a medical-grade product. The most common side effects are mild and temporary: redness, swelling or small bruises at the application points.
It isn’t indicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with infection, active herpes or lesions in the area, or if you are allergic to fish proteins or any component of the product. It also isn’t the best option when the main concern is laxity or volume loss.

How are polynucleotides different from hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid fills: it adds volume to the lips, cheekbones or folds, and the change shows from the session. The body reabsorbs it over time, anywhere from several months to more than a year depending on the product and area. Polynucleotides don’t fill: they support skin repair and gradually improve its quality. If you want volume, PDRN isn’t the tool; if you want better skin quality, it can be. Is a salmon sperm treatment like Botox?
No. Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles that create wrinkles when you make expressions; PDRN works on skin quality. They can be combined, but neither replaces the other.
